Korean paper (which is commonly known as “hanji”) is the most popular traditional handmade paper which is made in Korea. Hanji craft is made in many forms that contain jido, jiho and jiseung. Jido is that craft in which many layers of hanji is pasted on a frame that is pre-made. This frame is made by trunks and sewing baskets. In Jiho, hanji scraps are immersed in water and after that, they are mixed in glue for making a clay-like paste. This paste is engraved into lidded bowls. Jiseung form contains lining and weaving strips of hanji which is used to make an open and broad array of household goods containing trays, mats, quivers, baskets, washbasins, shoes and chamberpots. Korea is one of the leading and growing producer of ships in the world. These Made in Korea ships contain oil supertankers, oil-drilling platforms and many more. But Korean shipping industry expanded fastly in the early 1990s when Korean shipyards tripled their shipbuilding capacities, while ignoring demand levels in order to get leadership of the market, which they achieved in 1999. Also, according to an EU Commission report, the devaluation of Korean currency gave the yards an additional competitive advantage. Prices from the Korean yards had been reduced to 40% below production costs in 1999.
In the middle of the trade dispute with the EU, Korea began an ambitious program on 17 June 2002 to enhance the country’s leadership in the industry and totally ignored foreign pressure to reduce its shipbuilding capacity. In this program, a meeting was suggested between government officials and shipbuilders which was called for US $170 million to grow new technology over the next ten years. At the meeting, the Korean shipbuilders agreed to enhance their global market share from 30% in 2001 to 40% in 2010. It is also suggested in the meeting that high margin vessels like cruise ships and supply vessels, should be 35% of the total production in 2010 as compared to 13% in 2001.
Moreover, they also agreed to boost their exports of Made in Korea shipbuilding equipments and parts to US $2,000 million by 2010 from US $370 million in 2001. In this meeting, another important factor was also highlighted about Japanese shipbuilders who were teaming up to compete with Korean rivals through mergers and strategic partnerships. In May 2002, the largest shipbuilder of the world Hyundai Heavy Industries got US $400 million worth of orders from four reputed shipping organizations to build 12 petroleum carriers. At the same time, Hyundai captured the orders for 22 ships that worth was about US $800 million and from now till present, Korean shipbuilding industry is growing more and more and striving to make strong its position in the global shipbuilding market.

The goods in which Korea highly developed its export, steel is one of them. Made in Korea steel has huge demand in the global steel industry. According to the data released by the Export and Import Division of the Ministry Korea, the country recorded a trade surplus of $4.41 billion in this year’s April. This was the third consecutive month that a trade surplus was recorded.
According to the Korea Iron and Steel Association, Korean steel exports rose 9.5% which was equivalent to $1.22 billion in the first half of 1984. The association said exports of sheets and plates totaled $502 million in the first half of the year which was up 9.6% from the first half of 1983. Steel pipe exports rose 30.9% (which is $222 million) and steel rod shipments rose 49.3% (equivalent to $166 million.
Now, the Korean steel industry is going from strength to strength according to the domestic demand rising, capacity expands as well as exports to China and other markets in the region. According to BMI’s latest South Korea Metals Report in which it is said that production in South Korea increased by 30% in March, bringing the year to date total up by 29% to 13.2 million tonnes.
Hyundai Steel of Korea intimated in April 2010 that it has a plan to construct a blast furnace at Dangjin. The purpose is to meet the growing demand of steel for the country as well as for export throughout the world. This furnace has 4mn tpa of capacity which is 21% of the total capacity. Another furnace which has the same size is also going to complete in one month or more. Also, third furnace will increase the total capacity to 23.5 mn tonnes. High quality made in Korea automotive steel plates will also be produced by Hyundai Steel in the upcoming future.
